On Monday, 10 January, our group headed out to an eye camp in the slums. As the entire team was not quite ready, we stopped at an orphanage around the corner from where the eye screening camp was being held in the slums. Being around so many kids who have practically nothing was hard. My sister had mentioned that if I found a little one for her to adopt to bring them back with me. In the slums, the mothers were asking me if I would take their kids to America with me, especially the really little ones.
After spending the morning at the eye camp in the slums, we picked up lunch from McDonald’s, as we wanted to explore more things. Then we headed to a market. This market is not how I had imagined it, as it was little shops instead of open-air tables. While at the market, I bought some scarves and salwar kameez. The salwar kameez is a very comfortable outfit and very colorful. When we give our presentations back at school, I think my team is planning on wearing our “traditional” Indian outfits.
When we got back to the hotel, I rested for a little bit. When we were meeting for dinner, my classmates and instructors surprised me with cakes for my birthday. After cake, we headed to Hard Rock Café Hyderabad for dinner. Interestingly, the Hard Rock Café served beef hamburgers, which was a great birthday present. In addition to my beef hamburger, I was the honorary guest of the evening. The Hard Rock Café staff sang Happy Birthday to me. At the end of the Indian rendition of Happy Birthday, they served me a plate full of whip cream and a cherry on top, which ended up all over my face. It was sweet of my classmates to treat me on my birthday so far from my family and the rest of my friends. It was a great conclusion to my birthday!!!!!!
